Faith in Public Life Action Condemns Political Violence and Calls for Peace During Election Season
Washington, D.C – Faith in Public Life Action condemns the recent threat to former President Donald Trump’s life in Florida. Violence of any kind has no place in our democracy. Unfortunately, this follows another assassination attempt in July, highlighting the dangerous and unacceptable rise in political violence in our nation.
In both our nation’s present and its history, we have all seen how political rhetoric can incite violence. The words of those in power have significant implications, influencing both public sentiment and societal behavior. As people of many faiths, we are all called to denounce violence for political gain wherever it arises and stand firmly against the divisive rhetoric that threatens our collective well-being. But as people of faith, we recognize that there is a larger context that requires us to respond with a commitment rooted in our values and beliefs.
“Violence cannot achieve the work of the Divine that we seek to accomplish — creating a society that thrives on love and belonging. We cannot withdraw from our values or our vocations. While we press forward with confidence towards our liberation, we must remember that seeing one another’s humanity, even in those who might deny ours, is also the work of the Divine, said Jeanné Lewis, CEO of Faith in Public Life Action.”
As we get closer to November, it is becoming more evident that deep restoration is needed in our communities. We urge leaders, communities, and people of faith across the country to join us in firmly rejecting political violence, fostering environments of safety, and continuing the work of peace. Our collective efforts must focus on fostering unity and reinforcing the values that sustain our democracy.
